St. John Rivers' Calling

The proposal may be a surprise, but the impulse is good, right? Or is it? Do you think that the missionary zeal that St. John shows gives a positive view of Christianity? Is he an admirable character, a positive religious model?

  1. The thought behind, the proposal is well meaning, but the emotions behjind them are false and all absorbing. St. John doesnt believe that Jane is built for or capable of loving with a pasiion, or recieving love; and indeed she herself states that she is not but she has loved and has been loved and will continue to love. St. John hasn't taken into account that Jane is human, that she is not the automatron that he has made her into, his controlling ways would eventually be rebuked, Jane would eventually realize that his zeal to be great, to be the greatest were not her own aspirations, but she would continue to strive for his level, and, as she has said- it will kill her, it is killing her.
I think St. John is much too zealous to ever hold emotions for any person besides God, and the path to him , his means are admirable, the devoption he has to his calling is evidence of a feircly loyal follower, but thats all he will do, all he will be.

  2. St. Johns proposal to Jane was self-fish and only to help himself because he only asked his dear cousin to marriage when he reliaezed she was rich and is willing to share her blessing. Hopefully Jane will later reliaeze that St.John is just manuplilating her and using her for his own goods. The only person St. John can have feelings for is himself but he does take his religion and love for God to the heart. This is a negative view of Christanity which shows how people are suppose to care for everybody which makes St. Johns missionary zeal a negative view of Christanity. while, also it makes St. John look very bad.

  3. Yes I think that St. John is a selfless person that is on gods righteous path and its great that he is wants to be out spreading gods word to other people that have yet to hear of it. I think that this is great but, I think, religion clouds your proper judgement, which is what happened to St. John. That is why he proposed to Jane, because he only thought of gods mission and only thought of how he could utilize Jane to the best of her abilities because she is devoted to god and all that he has to offer her through guidance and protection. Jane, I think, realizes this and because she does, Jane says no to St. John's offer of going to India to become a missionaries wife. Jane seeks love from people and if she were to go with St. John, that love would not be able to be found and she would feel lost. Overall though, I believe that St. John is a positive character in a religious perspective because he is carrying out his duties as a devote christian and spreading the all mighty word of god. In a social perspective, I believe, St. John is actually a negative character because he does not trully love anything nor does he feel any attachement whatsover to wordly objects. In society, this is frowned upon because, as humans, we base things on need, want, like, and most importantly love. All of these things are something that St. John lacks in a social perspective
